Grammy nominee, Travis Greene, recently featured the Gospel music greats, Kirk Franklin and John P. Kee, on a song.
The song is titled “Hold on Me” and it has an amazing video to accompany its release. Greene and Franklin had a live session on Instagram to discuss the approach and concept of the music video.
The Video Concept
This video is set in a classic nightclub and a live band ready to entertain the audience. While the audience relaxes while getting served, the strobe lights and ambience set the mood for the music.
Kirk comes up to introduce Travis who begins the song, “Hold on Me.” Later on, John P. Kee comes into the picture with his legendary vocal dexterity. Kirk comes up the stage at the end of the song to round things up before he and Travis leave the stage together.
The concept of this music video has come under a lot of scrutinies from certain Christians. Most of them think it is a little extreme to shoot a gospel music video in a nightclub setting. What does Travis have to say about this?
Travis Greene and Kirk Franklin discuss the music video concept
Travis Greene needed to respond to all the comments about the video concept. He did in stellar fashion on Instagram live with the one and only Kirk Franklin.
According to Travis, he sought to communicate a specific truth about the Gospel. The word wasn’t meant to be shared just within the four walls of the church. It must extend beyond the boundaries of religious structures to the darkest parts of the earth. After all, light shines more in darkness.
Travis further stated that we had a huge assignment as Christians in the “Great Commission.” Jesus commanded that we should go into “all the world.” He didn’t tell us to stay within our church structures.
Kirk Franklin is one of the pioneers of extending the frontiers of gospel music using unorthodox methods. He has several singles that have topped Billboard charts including “Stomp” and “Revolution.” So it wasn’t strange that he was in support of this idea.
Kirk spoke about the crux of Jesus’ gospel being the creativity to bring his message to every gathering. According to him, we must change our mentality and stop thinking that God only moves in holy places. It is not about our location but our personality. After all, one could sit in church with a sinful heart.
